Steel is a versatile metal which comes in various types, shapes, and sizes. Each of the types has some distinctive quality that sets them apart. However, the most confusing type for the majority of the people is between hot and cold rolled sheets.
Some people believe that mere chemical composition is responsible for a different type of steel. On the other hand, manufacturing plays a significant role in the process. Here are the differences between hot and cold rolled sheets told by a hot rolled sheets manufacturer.
The primary difference between the two is the process used to manufacture steel. As the name suggests, hot rolled steel makes use of high temperature whereas cold rolled steel is the next step of hot rolled steels.
In hot rolled sheets, the sheet is rolled above steel’s recrystallization temperature so that it can take the desired shape wanted by the hot rolled sheet manufacturer. On the other hand, when the rolled steel is processed at room temperature, it produces a great surface finish.
Due to the less processing, the hot rolled sheets are affordable as compared to cold rolled sheets. One major factor difference between the two is the control of the shape of the final product. The final stage of making a hot-rolled sheet, the steel is left to cool off where it shrinks a little bit which decreases the control on the size of the sheet.
When it comes to cool rolled sheet, the sheet is already cold, this giving better shape. However, working with cold rolled sheet could be difficult as due to carbon particles.
These were the major differences between hot and cold rolled sheets. Knowing these will help in choosing the best one as per the requirements as well as the budget. Keep in mind to use hold rolled sheets where the precise shape of the steel is not the priority.
